Local firm and rugby team give burglary-hit Burnham United FC a boost

-

A fundraising sports match featuring Burnham-On-Sea’s best rugby and football players was held on New Year’s Eve to support Burnham-On-Sea’s football club, Burnham United AFC, following a major burglary.

Sunday’s match saw Burnham United AFC take on Burnham RFC in a ‘football vs rugby’ game at the Cassis Close sports ground. Watched by a crowd of supporters, the game was won by Burnham RFC 4-3.

Before the game, Lympsham car sales firm ‘Carbase’ stepped in with a donation to replace two large screen TV’s stolen from Burnham United in the burglary. Tim Walters from Carbase, pictured above, presented the TVs to BUFC Chairman Matt Counsell before the charity game.

Matt Counsell, Chairman, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “A massive thank you to Carbase, and everyone from both BUFC and Burnham On Sea Rugby Club who played and supported today’s game which was extremely entertaining and played in great spirits.”

Match organiser Ollie Taylor added: “It was a great match with a strong team spirit on show – it was a super get-together for the two clubs. The football team were two goals up but two late goals from the rugby side sealed their victory. A huge thank you goes to everyone for their support.”

As Burnham-On-Sea.com reported, thieves broke into the Burnham football club building in Cassis Close, stealing valuable equipment and cash – and leaving a trail of damage.
