Highbridge Foodbank receives £1,000 boost from tenants group

-

A grant of £1,000 has been donated to Highbridge’s Foodbank thanks to tenants across Sedgemoor.

The cash from Homes in Sedgemoor will go towards the running costs of the successful community scheme.

Foodbanks give to people in immediate need or crisis, who have been referred by professionals, and the parcels provide enough food for three days. Due to rising inflation and many income levels being frozen, many people are genuinely struggling to feed themselves.

Andrew Jackson, Chair of Highbridge Foodbank and Minister at Hope Baptist Church, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Thanks go to Homes in Sedgemoor for this money, which is much appreciated. The Foodbank has helped approximately 250 individuals since it began in July 2012.”

“It covers Highbridge and Burnham-On-Sea, Brean, Berrow, Mark, and the Huntspill villages right the way down to the Dunball roundabout. We operate under the guidance of the Trussell Trust, who oversee a large number of Foodbanks nationally.

“We partner with a number of agencies including amongst others Homes in Sedgemoor, the Probation Service and Childrens’ Centres. Looking to the future, we hope to expand operations so there is a Foodbank venue for each day of the week.”

“In Highbridge and Burnham, Asda and Tesco have been very generous; allowing us to collect from shoppers certain items we list on flyers handed out at their stores.”

Dawn Lang, Chief Executive of Homes in Sedgemoor, added: “I am pleased our tenants decided to support this excellent community initiative which is undoubtedly making a difference to people’s lives at difficult times. This is an example of how our Improving Your Communities Fund can make a difference, and it is great to see a wide range of organisations coming together to help.”

These organisations include Bridgwater & District Credit Union, Somerset Floating Family Support Service, Sedgemoor District Council, Sedgemoor Citizens Advice Bureau, and occasionally the YMCA.

Highbridge Area Foodbank locations are Hope Baptist Church, Church Street, Highbridge (Thursdays 9.30- 12 midday), Burnham-on-Sea Methodist Church in College Street, Burnham (Saturdays 10am-12 midday), St John’s Church in Highbridge (Wednesdays 10am-11.30am).

Andrew advises that potential visitors to the Foodbank call him before visiting by calling him on 07899 923451.
