Highbridge Foodbank has this week issued an urgent appeal for donations as demand outstrips supply.
Demand has doubled in recent weeks and donations are now not matching local need, say organisers.
“Every week the Foodbank provides half a tonne of food to those in need in the local area. These come from all wards of Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge,” said Chairman Wayne Sadler.
“Over the past year 644 people were fed by the Highbridge Foodbank – these were of all ages and included 449 children under 16.”
People are asked to bring in-date supplies of the following items to one of the donation points: Tinned tomatoes, Small jars of coffee, Tins of custard, Tins of fruit, Long life milk, Packets of smash, Tins of rice pudding, Tins of carrots, Tins of sweetcorn, Pasta sauce, Biscuits, snacks and chocolates for children.
Donations can be taken to Burnham-On-Sea’s Tesco store, Burnham Methodist Church or Hope Baptist Church in Highbridge.
There will also be a donation point at the Methodist Church during Burnham’s food festival later this month.
