The best and worst food outlets in the Burnham-On-Sea area have been named this week by Sedgemoor District Council as part of its new ‘Somerset Food Scores’ scheme.
Every food premises in Sedgemoor gets inspected by the council’s Food Safety Team who are required to give a rating at each inspection on how well the premises comply with legal requirements, cleanliness and structure. Those details have been recorded for the new Food Scores scheme.
Anna Hardman, Sedgemoor’s Food Safety Manager, said: “This is not a competition nor an award scheme but a system that allows customers and clients to see how their school, hospital, favourite sandwich bar or special occasion restaurant complies with food hygiene regulations.”
The best premises in the Burnham-On-Sea area, with a maximum of five stars, was RJ’s at Unity Farm at Brean.
Four stars was achieved by the Brent Knoll Inn at East Brent; Brent Knoll Tadpoles in Brent Knoll; Café Aroma in Adam Street, Burnham; The Fox and Goose Inn at Brent Knoll; The Goat House at Brent Knoll; Highbridge Social Club; The Packhorse Inn at Mark; The Old Rectory at Brean; Animal Farm Country Park at Berrow; Brightholme Caravan Park at Berrow; and The Place in Brean.
Three stars were given to The George Hotel in Highbridge; The Huntspill Arms in West Huntspill; and Sandyglade Takeaway at Berrow.
Just two stars were given to Shakers Club in Burnham; Stratton House Rest Home in Burnham; and The Watchfield Inn in Highbridge.
The areas assessed for the star rating are food-handling practices, condition of the premises; including cleanliness and the management systems in place.
The scheme also gives incentive for businesses that do not achieve a high standard to work with the council who will be able to offer advice and information on improving their food hygiene standards.
