Two holidaymakers were rescued on Wednesday morning (May 24th) after getting stranded in mud on Brean beach, surrounded by thick fog.
Coastguards from Burnham-On-Sea and crews from BARB Search and Rescue were called out at 9.55am to help the man and woman, who had become stuck in thigh-deep mud.
BARB’s Spirit Of Lelaina 2 hovercraft flew out to reach the casualties, who were extracted from the mud by Coastguards and then flown back to the safety of the beach.
“The two people had walked out across the mud to reach the sea when they got into difficulty,” said Coastguard Officer Ian Jefferies.
“They had shouted out to try and get help but could not be seen in thick sea fog, before one dialled 999 and asked for the Coastguard.”
BARB pilot Pete Francois added: “Visibility was down to just 50 metres so it was difficult hovercraft flying conditions, but close team working with the Coastguard meant we were able to locate the two people and bring them safely back to the shore.”
The two people were checked over by an ambulance crew on the beach and were found to be unhurt. Both are staying at a nearby holiday park in the village.
