A Highbridge councillor has this week expressed his concern about increased fly-tipping in the town.
Cllr Chris Williams’ comments come after a large quantity of builders waste was dumped in a lane just off Pople’s Bow this week.
Chris, pictured, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It is very sad to see rubbish like this being inconsiderately tipped in quiet areas of Burnham and Highbridge.”
“Fly tipping has always been a problem, but cases like this do make you wonder whether the recent introduction of charges for certain types of waste at Highbridge Recycling Centre is a factor.”
Burnham-On-Sea.com recently reported here that the Isleport Recycling Centre had introduced new charges for certain items as part of Somerset County Council’s cost-cutting measures, leading to fears about fly-tipping.
Somerset Waste Partnership, which operates Highbridge Recycling Centre, claims that fly-tipping rates have not increased since the recent changes.
“So far, the only evidence we have to link fly-tipping to the changes is the occasional placing of materials outside recycling centres,” spokesman Nick Cater told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
Meanwhile, Cllr Williams has been in contact with Sedgemoor District Council about getting the rubbish removed.
Fly-tipping is a criminal offence and the penalties for those convicted can be up to five years’ jail or an unlimited fine.
