A huge £5million project by Wessex Water to help alleviate flooding is ‘progressing well’ in Brent Knoll and Burnham-On-Sea.
The huge project involves building a new sewage pumping station, installing several new sewers, as well as making improvements to the existing sewerage system.
Micro tunnelling – an innovative tunnelling technique – is being used to complete the work while minimising disruption to the local community.
Andy Roberts, project manager at Wessex Water, explained that the sewerage improvement scheme aims to protect properties within Brent Knoll which had previously suffered from flooding in times of intense rainfall.
He told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Our essential work will help reduce the risk of flooding in the local area by providing extra capacity in the sewerage network as well as improve the reliability of the existing system.”
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused by these essential works and thank residents for their continue patience and cooperation.”
In March, Wessex Water will install pipework under the mainline railway north of Stodden’s Lane, which will link up the new pipework from Brent Knoll to Burnham-on-Sea.
Once the scheme is fully operational the temporary compound site near Stodden’s Lane will be reinstated to its original condition.
Wessex Water estimates that work will be finished by the end of October 2017.
