Week-long flood alert issued for Burnham-On-Sea coastline

-

A Flood Alert has been issued by the Environment Agency for the Somerset coastline today (Wednesday) as high tides are due to coincide with strong winds.

The Flood Alert is in force for Burnham-On-Sea and the agency says that with high tides due over the next few days the warning is likely to remain in force for the remainder of the week.

“Low pressure will cause sea levels to be higher than forecast in tide tables,” explained a spokesman.

“Overtopping and onshore flooding may occur as a result of sea spray, where strong winds blow water from the crests of waves onshore. Tides are currently rising and we will be re-issuing this flood alert which is likely to remain in force for the remainder of the week.”

Meanwhile, Sedgemoor District Council has closed the Berrow beach road entrance this week during the high tides amid concern that there will be further damage from the high tides.
