This bumper-sized cod was reeled in by an angler during a fishing competition in Burnham-On-Sea on Sunday (October 31st).
Doug Petrie landed the 11lb 15oz cod from his boat during a competition run by Burnham Boat Owners Sea Angling Association – the biggest cod caught by a club member for over three years.
Doug, pictured above, told Burnham-On-Sea.com that the fish was caught from the waters off Brean Down. “It’s certainly my best catch for a long time,” he said.
Other catches during Sunday’s competition included a 15lb 3oz conger eel by Andy Georgio (right), which won the award for heaviest conger.
Mark Bowden was in first place with an 11lb 8oz thornback ray, closely followed by Pete Nicholson with an 11lb 7oz ray.
Third was Gary Newdell with an 11lb 1oz ray. Several dog fishes were also reeled in by Nigel Devey and Anthony Georgio.
After several years of poor catches, the club says it is pleased that decent sized fish are returning to the Bristol Channel.
