Poor cod fishing season disappoints Burnham-On-Sea anglers

-

Just four fish were reeled in by the 20 anglers taking part in a sea fishing competition off Burnham on Sunday (Februry 24th).

Disappointed members of Burnham Boat Owners Association had taken to the waters of Bridgwater Bay in a flotilla of ten boats for the annual Ray Farthing competition, but during the course of six hours only a handful of fish was netted.

Youngster Chris Georgiou caught a 4lb 8oz cod, while Don Holland reeled in a 5lb 3oz bass, and Tony Tandy netted a 4lb 7oz cod and a 10lb 11oz Thornback Ray.

Craig Willis, competition organiser, said: “It was a disappointing day of catches, with far fewer cod than we’d usually expect at this time of year, but we had a good turnout from our members and in that respect it was successful.”

Despite a huge 12lb 8oz cod being caught near Hinkley Point in January, it’s been a slow season for cod fishing in Burnham during recent weeks.
