Scores of adult students in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge have been celebrating this week after receiving certificates for first aid and food safety following several weeks of work.

Sedgemoor Community Partnership has been running a series of courses at Morland Hall and those who have been successful received their Level 2 certificates for NLDC (Neighbourhood Learning in Deprived Areas) candidates on Thursday (14th April).

Pictured above are some of the students who received certificates, including (for general first aid) Jennifer Pope, Chris Preston, Elizabeth Davies, Phillip Green and Joanne Coltman and (for Food Safety in Catering & Hygiene) Kerry Brazier, Lorraine Hamblin, Joanne Coltman and Phillip Green.

Those who also passed, but who are not present in the picture, included (for first aid) Rev Sharon Crossman, Wendy Le Marchand, Janneane Cross, Louise Parkin, Carrie-Anne New, Pauline Loverage, Phil New, James Kempson, Nicolle Farrow, Sally Lemarchand and Samantha Smith.

Further certificates for CIEH Level 2 in Food Safety in Catering and Hygiene were also presented to Wendy Le Marchand, Pauline Loverage, Nicolle Farrow, Sharron Farrow, Sally Lemarchand, Samantha Smith, James Kempson, Kerry Brazier and Ken Niemczyk.

Sedgemoor Community Partnership was founded in 2008 in Highbridge from the previously operating charity Sedgemoor Association of Handicapped People.

The aim of the SCP is to pro-actively encourage enterprising thinking and act as a positive agent of change by providing a range of practical short courses and activities.

Sedgemoor Community Partnership’s Richard Matthews told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We have helped to create a community culture in which everything is possible, and the latent aspirations of community members are realised. Our objectives are to build social confidence by engaging people in activities in their community helping them to develop self-belief and emotional resilience and support them into volunteering, employment, self-employment or public office.”

“We are aware that there is a great demand for food preparation, food hygiene and first aid training from local residents and volunteers with community organisations in our area. We intend to provide the tools to see our users benefit from the hard economic conditions envisaged ahead.”

“Other groups which will benefit from the project are parents and families in need of additional support; adults with low levels of literacy and numeracy skills; adults with a below level 2 qualification; people on a low income; unemployed people and possibly homeless people.”

The British Red Cross trains people in life-saving skills, so they can respond to emergencies in their communities.
