Burnham’s fireworks ‘are in jeopardy without more financial backing’

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s annual fireworks display could be in jeopardy unless more cash is raised to support the cost of organising the popular event.

The Town Council’s £11,000 costs for holding the seafront display needto be topped up by local residents and businesses to make it viable, it was stated this week.

“The council cannot afford to keep funding the display, but it’s a superb event that we don’t want to lose,” Ian Jefferies, manager at BIARS (Burnham Information and Rescue Support), told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“It’s enjoyed by large crowds of people every year and it brings in lots of trade to the town during the run-up to the carnival. We need local people to support it.”

The comments come as a fundraising race night event is being held this Saturday (1st February) at the Oaktree Arena in Highbridge to raise funds for the display.

“Unlike most race nights there will be the chance to get very involved and actually become a horse for a race,” said organiser Jordan Jones. “There will also be a tote for the evening so you’ll be able to place small bets on the horses.”

Tickets are being sold at the Oaktree at £10 per person to include a buffet. The event will start at 7 for 7.30pm. All proceeds go to the Burnham Firework Fund.
