The organisers of Burnham-On-Sea’s annual seafront fireworks display say a spectacular show is in store this evening (Sunday).
This year’s fireworks will begin at 6.30pm, with a dazzling display on the beach next to the town’s jetty (pictured), to be accompanied by a line-up of classical and modern music.
Alan Christie from Skyburst fireworks, which is running the display, said: “There will be just over 200 aerial shell bursts.”
“There will also be 4,000 shots from roman candles and cakes, the totals averaging 210 shots per minute or 3.5 shots per second.”
“We are especially excited by the 5” silver strobe to red crossette shells – a sphere of blinking stars with a projection of six red stars that each split into four at the end of their trajectory and silver butterfly cylinder shells which produce a circle of spinning tourbillions. Keep an eye out for the smiley/sad and cat face shells and also the swimming stars as they dance across the sky!”
“The music this year will be a special mix of pop, classical and epic themes to enhance the fireworks, which build in increasing waves of intensity to the grand finale shots of Corolla to Blue – a stunning silvery gold ball of tightly packed tendrils with blue tips.”
The event will be free of charge thanks to the sponsorship of local firms, however spectators are being encouraged to give donations to the charity collection being run by Burnham’s Rotary Club.
The public viewing area will be from the Esplanade, with the beach forming part of the exclusion zone. However, this may have to be extended, as in previous years, depending on weather factors and wind direction.
This year’s event is being funded by Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge Town Council with support from local businesses including Highbridge Caravans, Positive Wealth Creation, Retreat Caravan Park, Newcombe Caravan Park, Co-Op Funeral Services, and Skyburst Illuminations.
A Dutch band will also be playing on the seafront from 6pm. Large crowds are expected to line The Esplanade to watch the display. Motorists driving to the event are being advised to leave plenty of extra time due to various road closures in force.
The display is organised by Burnham and Highbridge Town Council in the run-up to Monday’s Burnham-On-Sea Carnival.
