Future of Burnham-On-Sea fireworks to be secured at breakfast

-

The future of Burnham-On-Sea’s annual seafront fireworks display is expected to be secured this week when thousands of pounds is raised towards running the event at a special business breakfast.

Sedgemoor Tourism Association and Burnham Chamber of Trade are holding the early morning business meeting at the Oaktree Arena on the outskirts of Burnham on Thursday morning (June 12th).

Burnham-On-Sea.com reported earlier this year how cash-strapped Sedgemoor District Council, which has run the display for several years, had withdrawn its funding of the event because of its £1.8m funding shortfall.

“The Town Council will provide £2,500 towards running the event, but there is still a shortfall of £5,000. This week’s business breafast aims to plug that gap by raising the money needed to hold the event,” organiser Tom Ashton told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

The event will start at 7.30am and includes a key note speech by Andrew Sanders, regional manager of Lloyds Bank, about economic partnerships. Tickets are still available by calling 01278 786726.

The annual fireworks display – which was cancelled in 2007 due to strong winds – often attracts crowds of up to 5,000 people along The Esplanade on the evening before November’s street carnival.
