Fireworks barge proposal is scrapped by Burnham councillors

-

Plans to use a barge in the middle of Bridgwater Bay to launch thousands of fireworks during Burnham-On-Sea’s annual display have been scrapped this week.

Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported in July how a high tide occurring on the night of the display, on Sunday November 7th, meant the organisers had decided to launch the pyrotechnics from a floating barge because the jetty will be underwater.

Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported in July how a high tide occurring on the night of the display, on Sunday November 7th, meant the organisers had decided to launch the pyrotechnics from a floating barge because the jetty will be underwater.

The company which is contracted to oversee the fireworks display put together a proposal outlining the costs and advantages of using  the barge, but the proposal has this week been rejected by the town council.

Town Clerk Eileen Shaw told Burnham-On-Sea.com the fireworks will instead be let off from a temporary scaffolding tower on the jetty.

“The cost of the barge was high and didn’t really give us enough benefits in terms of safety so a decision has been made to use scaffolding on the jetty instead.”

The hugely popular annual event, attended by thounsands of spectators, will start at 7pm on November 7th, the night before Burnham’s annual winter carnival.
