Mobility scooters worth tens of thousands of pounds have been destroyed in a suspicious fire at a Burnham-On-Sea nursing home this morningt (Tuesday, September 1st).
Burnham fire crews were called to BUPA’s Nursing and Residential Centre in Oxford Street at 5.25am after reports that a shed was on fire.
Two fire engines were called to the scene and crews used hose reel jets to tackle the blaze.
A fire spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This incident was brought under control at 5.52am. Crews extinguished the fire, currently under investigation, using two hose reel jets.”
“The structure was completely destroyed by fire and heat, together with its contents of three mobility scooters.”
Mark Elliott, regional director at Bupa Care Services, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “There was a fire in an outside shed which was swiftly brought under control, and no one was hurt. The vigilance of staff allowed them to act quickly to ensure the safety of our residents.”
“We are now working closely with the police and the fire brigade to help their investigation. We take any incident very seriously and we continually review the fire and security procedures at all our care homes.”
