These were the dramatic scenes on the M5 motorway near Burnham-On-Sea on Saturday afternoon (February 11th) after a car burst into flames.
James Stevens, a Burnham-On-Sea.com reader, captured these photos on his mobile phone of the blazing vehicle on the hard shoulder.
Two fire crews were sent to the scene at 12.39pm after passing motorists reported the vehicle alight close to junction 24 on the northbound carriageway.
“Crews used two breathing apparatus and one hose reel jet to extinguish the fire,” a fire spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“The cause of the fire was an accidental electrical fault, which caused severe damage to the vehicle by heat and smoke.”
Speed restrictions were put in place on the motorway while fire crews were at the scene and two lanes were briefly closed, causing delays for motorists. There were no reports of any injuries.
