Man arrested after huge blaze at former Bridgwater sports club

-

A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after fire crews from Burnham-On-Sea and across the county battled a huge blaze in Bridgwater on Sunday night.

More than 10 fire crews – including firefighters from Burnham-On-Sea – worked overnight to put out the blaze at the disused Bridgwater Sports and Social Club, which started shortly after 8.30pm.

A 45-year-old man was arrested by Avon and Somerset Police on Monday morning and remains in custody.

The building was 60 per cent damaged by fire and crews said the cause had been deliberate.

Crews from Bridgwater, Taunton, Street, Nether Stowey, Wellington, Williton, Martock, Somerton and Burnham were sent to tackle the blaze.

Flames jumped from the roof and thick black smoke billowed into the sky, as pictured here, as the blaze quickly spread through the disused building whose roof was made of asbestos, which further complicated the operations.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus used water jets and aerial ladder platforms to extinguish the blaze.
