Thick smoke from a heathland fire near Watchet could be seen from as far away as Burnham-On-Sea on Thursday evening (July 27th).
Somerset Fire Service received numerous calls after a heathland fire was spotted in the hills near Watchet. Our photo, taken from Burnham seafront, shows smoke rising from the hills with Stert Island pictured in the foreground.
“After an initial attendance by a pump from Minehead and an assessment of the heath fire carried out, the incident was then esculated to four pumping appliances and six specialist appliances from Porlock and Dulverton. The other resources came from Lynton, Williton and Bridgwater,” said a spokesman.
The blaze covered around four acres of heathland. Fire crews used beaters and specialist appliances with an off road capability to fight the blaze.
