Burnham fire-fighters dealt with one of their most unusual incidents of the year on Saturday evening (May 13th) when a holidaymaker became trapped inside a block of public toilets.
Red-faced Isobel Thomas – on holiday from Derby in the West Midlands – was trapped in the ladies loos near Burnham’s Tourist Information Centre for almost an hour after an attendant inadvertently locked her in.
Her husband, John, was unsuccessful in tracking down a keyholder, so called out the fire brigade as a last resort.
“She was stuck in there for over 50 minutes,” said John.
“The attendant didn’t seem to have properly checked whether anyone was inside. The door was locked so quickly she hadn’t had time to say anything. I had no option but to call the fire service.”
The fire crew initially tried forcing open the door without damaging it, as pictured, but ultimately tracked down a district council officer with the all-important key.
Needless to say, the lady was happy to be back in the open again and the couple were able to continue on their car journey back home to Derby.
