Road survey at Berrow crash site reveals scale of speeding problems

-

Berrow Parish Council has this week called on police to help reduce the speed of traffic along the village’s Coast Road following a fatal accident on Sunday (February 26th) in which two men died.

Berrow Parish Council Clerk Lynn Smith told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “At the moment, the cause of this collision is not known but Berrow Parish Council is aware that there is a general problem with speeding along the Coast Road, which has a limit of 30mph.”

“For two weeks in October last year, Somerset County Council installed a Speed Indication Device along the Coast Road, which found that during the monitoring 17,088 of the 20,166 cars which passed the device were travelling over the speed limit with 2,463 cars exceeding 40mph and 219 cars exceeding 50mph.”

She added: “Berrow Parish Council has reported this to Avon and Somerset Police and it is hoped that they may be able to help stop this problem.”

The comments come after Burnham-On-Sea.com reported here that a black BMW M3 travelling from Brean in the direction of Burnham careered off Coast Road on Sunday in thick fog at 4.45am near the entrance to Sandy Glade holiday park. Emergency crews rushed to the scene but nothing could be done to save the two men – aged 37 and 25 – trapped in the wreckage.

Police have appealed for any witnesses to the collision to come forward by contacting their non-emergency number, 101.
