Updated: Two men killed in car crash on Berrow’s Coast Road

-

Two people have died following a serious car crash in Berrow, near Burnham-On-Sea, this morning (Sunday, February 26th).

A black BMW careered off Coast Road in thick fog at 4.45am near the entrance to Sandy Glade holiday park, as pictured here.

Fire, police and ambulance crews from Burnham were sent to the scene but nothing could be done to save the two men who were trapped inside the wreckage.

Inspector Dave Horwood told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I can confirm that two men, both believed to be from the West Midlands, have died.”

“The cause of the incident is not known at this stage, but there was thick fog in the area at the time and it is not known whether this was a contributory factor.”

He confirmed that no-one else had been in the vehicle at the time of the accident. Police appealed for any witnesses to contact them using their non-emergency number of 101. Click here for video footage from the scene.

Coast Road was closed for over six hours to allow police to start their investigation and enable recovery of the vehicle. Traffic was diverted along Berrow’s Red Road.

The incident comes less than a fortnight after an earlier crash on Coast Road, as Burnham-On-Sea.com reported here. The latest incident is certain to add more pressure on Somerset County Council to introduce new safety measures along the road following a long-running campaign.
