The future of Burnham’s monthly farmers markets has been secured following a successful meeting this week organised by the Town Council.
The Town Council has agreed to safeguard the markets’ future by transferring management to Somerset Farmers’ Markets, an organisation that currently oversees nine markets across the county.
Burnham’s Town Centre Manager Anne-Marie Spalding said: “Following our meeting with Somerset Farmers’ Markets, it has been agreed that they will take over the administration of the market.”
Agreed dates for the Burnham-On-Sea events stretch into 2009 and include: 25th April 2008, 30th May 2008, 27th June 2008, 25th July 2008, 29th August 2008, 26th September 2008, 31st October 2008, 28th November 2008, 19th December 2008, 30th January 2009, 27th February 2009 and 27th March 2009.
The news ends months of uncertainty about the events. Burnham-On-Sea.com reported last December how the loss of Mrs Spalding, due to district council financial cutbacks, had put a question mark over the future of the events.
Mrs Spalding has in the past organised the successful High Street markets on the last Friday of each month, co-ordinating stall bookings and arranging road closures.
SFM’s Liz Scott will act as Market Manager on the day and that the viability of the markets will be reviewed again in 2009.
