A town councillor has called for a re-think on whether Burnham-On-Sea’s monthly farmers markets should be held in the town’s High Street.
During the latest council meeting, Cllr Louise Parkin questioned whether the number of stalls at the events justifies the High Street being closed each month.
“Is it worthwhile closing the street for a small amount of stalls when road closures are so detrimental to the trade of our existing shops?” she asked.
Cllr Burridge-Clayton said that stall numbers may simply be down in the winter months compared to the summer due to weather, while Burnham’s Mayor, Cllr Michael Clarke, said she had raised “an interesting point”.
It was agreed that the Town Projects Committee would monitor the number of stalls and attendance in coming months.
The markets are held in the High Street on the last Friday morning of each month, and offer a wide variety of fresh local produce.
Some shops along the High Street say the events bring in extra footfall and boost trade, while others believe the markets take away business.
