A Burnham-On-Sea resident has called on the Town Council to consider introducing new speed limit signs along Queen’s Drive due to apparent confusion among motorists about the limit.
Town councillors have considered the proposal from a resident during one of their latest meetings this month.
The resident says in their letter: “Following a post on social media reminding local residents that the speed limit for Queen’s Drive is 60mph road, it shocked me that the vast number of people replying didn’t know this. The majority seemed to believe it was still a continuation of the 30mph limit.”
“There are signs as you enter from the motorway roundabout informing drivers of the speed limit change, however from entering the road from the Love Lane roundabout (by Tesco) there are no signs to inform of the change of speed limit, so my idea is to place one sign informing of the speed limit change.”
“On a typical day, I come across many people going 30mph on that road. This causes traffic problems, dangerous driving conditions for people trying to overtake, and driving too slowly also is a danger. I feel the introduction of a 60mph sign at the entrance of the Queens Drive would be a good start and hopefully will reduce accidents.”
However, town councillors have decided that the introduction of speed limit signs is not necessary and have not supported further action.
Cllr Barabara Vickers said: “I see people speeding along Queen’s Drive all the time. Everyone should know that the National Speed Limit applies when they go out of the areas where speed limit signs are installed. Also, 60mph does not mean that drivers have to travel at 60mph. It’s a limit, not a target.”
“They should also take the conditions of the road into account. There have been many accidents over the years at the junction [near Home Farm] that leads to Middle Burnham. There is also limited visibility going over the railway bridge with potential for cyclists using the road. I don’t think speed limit signs are needed. The Highways Code covers it.”
