Coastguards from Burnham-On-Sea were called to Brean on Saturday afternoon (March 21st) when a group of volunteers taking part in a beach clean found an ‘explosive object’ washed up.
Brean’s beachwarden alerted Coastguards, who sent a team to investigate and safely remove the unexploded flare.
“The flare was manufactured in 1997 and was still live so could have exploded,” said Burnham Coastguard Officer Ian Jefferies.
“The beachwarden was right to alert us as soon as it was found – objects like this can be dangerous. It has been taken away and will be properly disposed of.”
Beachwarden Dave Furber added: “The best advice for anyone who finds a suspected explosive device like this is never to touch it and to stay away, then to let myself or the Coastguard know.”
