Residents across the Burnham-On-Sea area backed UKIP during the European Elections, official voting figures have confirmed.
Sedgemoor figures for the European Elections, released today, showed United Kingdom Independence Party was the biggest party locally.
The final voting figures for Sedgemoor were as follows:
An Independence from Europe – 442
British National Party – 272
Conservative Party – 8,639
English Democrats Party – 285
Green Party – 2,400
Labour Party – 3,362
Liberal Democrats – 2,910
UKIP (United Kingdom Independence Party) – 11,216
The total number of balloted papers in Sedgemoor was 29,590 with a turnout of 34.32%. There were 64 rejected or spoilt papers.
UKIP topped the poll, winning two seats across the South West. The Conservatives also took two seats, with Labour and the Green Party each taking one seat.
Conservatives Ashley Fox and Julie Girling retained their seats, but double Olympic gold medal winning rower James Cracknell missed out as the party saw its seats slip from three to two.
Lib Dem Sir Graham Watson, who first won a seat on the European Parliament in 1994, failed to be re-elected as one of six MEPs for the region.
William Dartmouth, elected for UKIP along with Julia Reid said: “This is a massive wake-up call to the establishment politicians and media – there are a lot of people dissatisfied and feel their concerns are not properly responded to.”
