Rumours that business units at a new £1.16m business enterprise centre being built in Highbridge have been reserved for Hinkley Point workers rather than local businesses have been denied by the county council this week.
The new ‘business enterprise hub’ at Highbridge’s Isleport Recyling Centre will be home to up to 35 small businesses and there are hopes it will create scores of new jobs.
However, several firms at the town’s Morland Industrial Park, which is to be demolished later this year, say they have been told the business units are to be kept back for Hinkley Point to be used as possible engineering workshops.
However, Highbridge County Councillor John Woodman told Burnham-On-Sea.com that the rumours are incorrect. “The sole purpose of the new enterprise centre is to encourage start-ups and create new businesses in Highbridge, thereby generating new jobs in Highbridge. With job creation in mind, we would of course be mad to turn away firms that could supply Hinkley Point in the future.”
A Somerset County Council spokesman added: “We will consider any business and would invite interested parties to call 01823 355867 for further information.
The two-storey building will contain over 130 square metres for office space, and a further 130 square metres for ‘business incubation’ space. The centre aims to help small firms gain offices to expand their operations and create jobs.
