The starting gun for the general election has been fired and Burnham-On-Sea’s candidates have today (Tuesday April 6th) stepped up their door-to-door campaigns after Gordon Brown’s announcement that the election will be held on May 6th.
David Heathcoat-Amory will be defending his long-held Wells parliamentary seat – which covers the Burnham area – against Liberal Democrat Tessa Munt, Labour’s Andy Merryfield, UKIP’s Jake Baynes, and BNP candidate Richard Boyce (all pictured above).
There could also be other candidates who have yet to announce their participation since the formal nomination process will open on 14th April and close at 4pm on April 20th.
After controversy surrounding parliamentary expenses and election leaflets in recent months, it promises to be a keenly-fought campaign in the Burnham area.
At the last election in 2005, Mr Heathcoat-Amory won the seat by 3,040 votes, attracting 23,071 in total.
The Lib Dems were in second place with 20,031, Labour was third with 8,288 and UKIP won 1,575. The Wells seat is one of the Lib Dem’s top targets nationally.
