A Burnham-On-Sea couple who are on holiday in Egypt have this week spoken of their anger at an airline’s plans to cut their trip short due to the political unrest over recent weeks.
Retired businessman Peter O’Reilly and his partner Jacquie Chorley, pictured, are in Sharm el Sheikh and told Burnham-On-Sea.com on Tuesday that they are “furious” that their £2,000 holiday may be cut short due to Jet2’s plans to suspend services to the Red Sea resort.
They are enjoying a month-long winter break after jetting out from Leeds-Bradford Airport last Friday.
The couple were due to return home on March 4th but the airline has told them to get a flight home with Jet2 on February 25th.
It said the “safety and comfort of our customers is our number one priority” and pledged to refund bookings.
But Peter, who is staying at the four-star Oriental Resort Hotel in Nabq Bay, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It’s a ridiculous situation. The Foreign office has advised against travel to Cairo, but the Red Sea is still completely safe and there are no problems here.”
“We feel gutted that this is happening after looking forward to this holiday for many months. Jacquie is obviously very disappointed too.”
“There were a number of empty seats on the flight out and I think they are more concerned about that than anything else.”
A spokeswoman for Jet2.com said: “Due to the ongoing state of civil and political unrest in Egypt, Jet2 and Jet2holidays have suspended flight services and holidays to Sharm el Sheikh and Hurghada from March 1st.”
“Whilst the Red Sea resorts are not currently affected, the safety and comfort of our customers is our number one priority, and as such we do not want them to face the stressful uncertainty of whether their holiday will go ahead as planned.”
“Customers will automatically receive a full refund for the cost of their flights or holiday, plus a discount off a new booking. Jet2 and Jet2holidays will replace the suspended Egypt programme with additional flights and holidays to Spain and Portugal adding 70,000 seats across a number of its bases.”
