New Easter crosses have been erected on the top of Brent Knoll by a team of volunteers this weekend, a year after vandals halted the display.
The three crosses are a familiar sight on the Knoll and have been installed each Easter for over 40 years by Somerset Churches Together.
Last year, vandals damaged and pulled down the crosses, which provoked outcry, as we reported here at the time.
Burnham-On-Sea.com was invited along on Saturday (March 24th) to see the new replacement crosses being installed.
Andrew Gilling, one of the organisers, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “After last year’s setback we were determined not to let the vandals affect this year’s display.”
“New 16ft-tall crosses have been arranged and supplied by Somerlap, and these were installed by a team of nine volunteers over the course of almost two hours.”
Colin Burt, one of the team who helps to install them each year, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This has been an important part of Easter for us for many years – it’s the physical part of the season and means a lot to us.”
Thousands of motorists on the M5 motorway see the crosses on top of Brent Knoll throughout the Easter holiday period.
The traditional outdoor hill-top Easter service next to the crosses took place on Sunday afternoon.
