Burnham-On-Sea’s Mayor and Mayoress officially opened a new £10,000 play area at East Huntspill Pre-School on Saturday (December 9th).
It comes after Burnham’s Tesco supermarket awarded £10,000 to the project from its ‘Bags of Help’ token scheme last year, as we reported here. The money is raised from the 5p levy on plastic bags.
East Huntspill Pre-school has just completed work on the new road safety themed soft play area, which is already proving popular with the children.
And Mayor Bill Hancock and Mayoress Frances Hancock cut a ribbon to officially open the facilities on Saturday afternoon amid the sound of loud cheers.
Becky Puddy, treasurer at the pre-school, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The funding means we’ve been able to replace uneven paving slabs and a tired old play area with a modern, safe and educational play area.”
“The children love it – they have a new road safety themed surface with zebra crossing and lights, a garage, undercover seating area, new fencing and gates.”
“It makes such a big difference and we thank all those shoppers at Burnham’s Tesco store who supported us by giving their tokens to us!”
“I would also like to thank Lesley Meaker for all her wonderful hard work on filling in all the paperwork and forms to get us this far. We appreciate it!”
The children enjoyed a snow machine and a Christmas fair during the formal opening on Saturday.
The project also aims to encourage the youngsters to have a greater understanding of road safety during interactive learning and play.
Lindsey Crompton, Head of Community at Tesco, said: “Bags of Help has been a fantastic success. We been overwhelmed by the response of our customers and it’s been great to give people a say on how the money will be spent in their community. We love seeing the projects come to life.”
Since launching in 2015, Bags of Help has awarded more than £25m across thousands of local projects around the UK.
