Sand dunes along Burnham-On-Sea’s coastline have seen severe erosion following high tides during the past few days.
The dunes at Berrow beach, shown here, have been cut back by 10-15 feet during the latest stormy weather.
Sedgemoor District Council’s Resorts Manager Graham Newing, pictured above, inspected the damage on Saturday.
“It’s sad to see the dunes cut back this much. Berrow has been especially hard hit while Brean and Burnham have seen some erosion too,” he told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
Sedgemoor’s landscape officer, Janette Burton, added: “We can’t stop erosion, it is a natural change, but the storms have left their mark. It’s unfortunate that the strong westerly winds coincided with the high tides, causing the erosion.”
“We will be taking advice from Natural England over the next few days to monitor the erosion and see whether repairs are needed.”
The storms have created ‘dune cliffs’ along several parts of the coastline. Walkers using the dunes where erosion has occurred have been advised to take care where there are now steep drops at the edge of the beach.
