Silver and bronze Duke of Edinburgh awards were presented to dozens of students at Highbridge’s King Alfred School this week following a year of expeditions and community work.
A total of 41 students received bronze awards and eight received silver awards during the annual presentation evening, held at East Bridgwater School.
The school’s Steve Ablett told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Students completed two day expeditions on the Quantocks and three day expeditions on the Brecon Beacons.”
“They also volunteered at school and the wider community in a range of activities, including litter clearance at a local park.”
“The highlight of the evening for many was an inspiring speech given by Stuart Boreham, the world’s first disabled solo ocean rower.”
Silver award winners from King Alfred School were Iain Mortimer, Mark Coles, Charlotte Lockyer, Ross Laidlaw, Danielle Edwards, Claire Polly, Nick Bennett and Matthew Lewis.
Bronze award winners were Aron Corfield, Matthew Brown, Martin Hewlett, Jack Bennett, Emily Sanders, Gina Warnes, Ashley Thomas, Catherine Lodge, Amanda Hubbard, Jakki Gamble, Jordan Frost, Danielle Edwards, Megan Olding, Parris Keirle, Naomi Roper, Kayleigh Pomeroy, Hollie Cottle, Lewis Plume, Gemma Nash, Kate Kilmartin, Stephen May, Vicky Barr, Ben Hester, Hannah Sutcliffe, Lee Coles, Milly Bream, Charlotte Dawson, Charlotte Redstone, Mark Schroeder, Lauren Summers, Sian Knight, Ceri Plested, Alec Cockram, Laura Oakley, Owen Jandrell, Alice Hocking, Josh Herrington, Sophie Creswick, Rosie Barsby, Gemma Duffy and Bradley Chedzoy.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme gives opportunities for personal achievements, adventure, community and social involvement, plus a widening of interests. To qualify for an award a young person must satisfy the requirements of four sections – service, expeditions, skills and physical recreation.
