A family of ducklings has been rescued by Burnham-On-Sea wildlife carers after getting stuck down a road drain.
Secret World Wildlife Rescue’s Graeme Thompson helped retrieve the tiny ducklings after they became stuck.
He says: “Mother duck was walking her family along a road through Kingston St. Mary when she was spooked by passing traffic and flew off. The babies scattered and some went into a nearby garden, but three fell down a drain.”
“Two local residents raised the alarm. Vicki, who is another wildlife carer, and I attended. The drain was quite deep. By lying on my side in the gutter and stretching down I could just manage to touch the bottom.”
“The ducklings kept peeping out from the drain tunnel. Whilst I was lying there, waiting for one to come within reach, I heard a passing motorist stop and ask if he should call an ambulance!”
“When one showed itself, I managed to grab it and pass it up to Vicki to be boxed. Eventually, after long waits, the other two gave themselves up and they were brought to Secret World, where animal carer Sam was delighted to take them into her loving care.”
“They were placed in the protection of a heated incubator and, as with all small bird and mammal orphans that come to Secret World, they were given a soft toy to snuggle up to as a substitute for their missing mum.”
“They will remain in the care of Secret World until they are mature enough to be released into the wild.”
