Wildlife carers from Secret World Wildlife Centre near Burnham-On-Sea were called to Weston’s Winter Gardens on Tuesday (July 12th) to help a family of baby ducklings stuck on a roof.
Cindy Taylor, one of Secret World’s volunteer carers, was horrified to find the ducklings were stuck in a pool of industrial glue – and three have since died from their ordeal.
Staff and volunteers worked hard to remove the glue with white spirit and then gave the ducklings a bath in fairy liquid.
Extra special care had to be taken because of the birds’ sensitive young eyes.
Pauline Kidner, the charity founder, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It is always good to see how the staff and volunteers swing into action when these things happen.”
“We really doubted that we would be able to save them as they appeared dead when they arrived. Although it is early days yet, we are thrilled that they are looking so much better in the incubator and will soon be able to feed.”
Careless disposal of the glue by contractors caused the incident and the Winter Garden staff are doing their best to ensure there is no repeat.
