A crowd of spectators turned out to watch the unusual spectacle of dozens of rubber ducks floating down the River Brue on Saturday (April 23rd) when Burnham-On-Sea Lions Club held its annual fundraising duck race.
The traditional event sees dozens of sponsored ducks being released into the estuary near Burnham Sailing Club before being scooped out further downstream, with the quickest winning their sponsor a prize.
This year’s race raised funds for Burnham’s Hillview Juvenile Carnival Club and several of the organisation’s youngsters were invited along to watch Saturday’s event.
Organiser Andrew Bryant told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This year’s event helped Hillview continue the great job they do in keeping up the carnival tradition in Burnham and Higbridge.”
“Because of the slow outgoing tide and high wind we had to use the short course for the race and a number of ducks had to be rescued – although thankfully none were injured!”
The eventual winners were ducks sponsors Linda Colman, Deb Whiting and Richard Coe.
“Our congratulations go to the winners and everyone who sponsored the ducks. Particular thanks also go to the members of Hillview JCC who sold them and to the members of Burnham Boat Owners Club who so patiently indulged the landlubber Lions!” added Andrew.
