Burnham-On-Sea man avoids jail term after drink driving accident

-

A Burnham-On-Sea man who injured another motorist when he drunkenly crashed his car has avoided a jail sentence this week.

Scott Phillimore of Grenville Road in Burnham had to be cut from his car following the accident on the A371 on October 23rd last year.

Bristol Crown Court heard this week that police had earlier in the evening been called to a pub in Cheddar where the 20-year-old was seen to be under the influence of alcohol.

But, on leaving the pub, Phillimore decided to attempt to drive home and crashed his car. Robert Reid, prosecuting, said the car veered onto the wrong side of the road, narrowly missing one vehicle before hitting another.

“The driver of the other vehicle suffered fractured ribs and they were both shaken,” said Mr Reid. “The most serious injuries were to the defendant, who had to be cut from his vehicle. His own passenger escaped unhurt.”

Derek Perry, defending, said his client held down a responsible job and the incident was an “outlandish one-off”.

Phillimore, who admitted dangerous driving and failing to provide a specimen, was given a two-year community order, a two-year driving ban, 250 hours unpaid work and a three-month ban from all licensed premises. He has also been asked to pay £500 to both motorists in the car he crashed into and £250 costs.
