Youngsters at Highbridge’s Dreamscheme have been continuing to get creative this week, earning points by making hanging baskets ready for the town’s Britain in Bloom entry this summer.
40 young people have attended the sessions and worked with staff from Sanders Garden World at Brent Knoll and Dreamscheme leaders, making baskets in red, white and blue to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
Over 75 hanging baskets have been made and hey are now being cared for by Cheddar Vale Nurseries until they are blooming and ready to hang.
The young people will be working in partnership with Highbridge in Bloom, offering the baskets to homes and businesses along Church Street and Market Street at the end of May.
The idea was inspired by the group following the Silver Gilt award won by Highbridge in last year’s Britain in Bloom competition.
PCSO Claire Chambers, founder of the Highbridge Dreamscheme, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The staff at Sanders were fantastic and worked really well with the young people, presenting them with some seed potatoes at the end of the day for them to continue learning about how things grow and where our food comes from.”
“We’d like to personally thank Peter Burks, General Manager of Sanders who helped organise both the activity and funding of the baskets.”
“The young people thoroughly enjoyed the session and are looking forward to watching the baskets grow and personally delivering them to the homes in Church Street and Market Street.”
The Highbridge Dreamscheme was been set up in January 2009 by the Highbridge Beat Team in partnership with the Local Action Team for Highbridge and sees young people aged between 8-16 years old come together and take part in community work, earning points that can be used towards day trips and other activities.
