Police in Highbridge have launched a new youth project this week which will encourage young people in the area to help improve their local community.
The Dreamscheme initiative sees people aged between 8 and 16 years old come together and take part in community work, and in turn earn points that can be used towards day trips and other activities.
PCSO Claire Chambers told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The volunteers will organise clean-up days, flower planting or other jobs that need doing to improve the local area and in return we will arrange fun activities or take them on day trips – they can use their points however they like!”
“It is a great opportunity for the young people of Highbridge to have some fun, whilst contributing to their neighbourhood at the same time.”
“Over 60 children turned up to the first Dreamscheme meeting on Saturday (January 17th), and they were really keen to get started, which was encouraging. I hope this initiative provides the volunteers with a sense of pride in their work and their community.”
During last week’s meeting the children decided their first community project will be to arrange to clean up days during February half term – one at Apex and the other at Southwell Park. In return, they will exchange their points for a trip to the bowling alley.
The Highbridge Dreamscheme has been set up by the Children and Young Persons Sub-Committee of the Local Action Team for Highbridge alongside the Highbridge Police.
