Security investigators have this week joined local police in carrying out a check of door staff working at pubs and clubs in Burnham-On-Sea and Brean.
The operation was conducted after police received tip-offs that door staff were working illegally in the area.
Five pubs and clubs in our area were visited and eight door supervisors were inspected. Seven were found to be working legally with valid Security Industry Authority licences like the one pictured here.
One person, however, was found to be working with an expired licence and is due to be interviewed further. Action may also be taken against the employee’s manager for employing the unlicensed door supervisor.
Paul Cartlidge, an Security Industry Authority Head of Investigation, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We were happy to support the police during this intelligence-led operation and action will now be taken against those found flouting the law.”
“Door supervisors must renew their SIA licence in good time before the old one expires – there is no grace period between licences. There will be further operations to ensure venues and door staff in the area are operating legally.”
Police Neighbourhood Sergeant Ian Kennett added: “It is reassuring to know that the majority of door staff were working within the law and I know from experience that local door staff and licensees work closely with us and do a good job. I am determined to make our communities safer and by working in partnership with the SIA and other agencies to raise the standard of management in licensed premises, I believe we will succeed.”
By law, all door supervisors must hold a valid SIA licence and display this at all times while working. If they are employed directly by a venue as a staff member, rather than through a contractor, the manager must also hold a licence.
