More than a dozen community groups from across Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge received grant cheques from the town council this week.
Representatives of 14 organisations gathered in the town council chambers in Jaycroft Road to be handed their grant funds by Mayor Eric Gill. The community money is handed to local groups each year at this time.
Those receiving money included David Cardwell of Burnham and Highbridge Army Cadets (£250 towards a projector for presentations), Pilot Officer Robinson of 290 Squadron Air Cadets (£250 towards a photocopier), and Dave Gordon of Burnham Sea Cadets (£250 towards a galley extension and refurb).
The other recepients were Di Monaghan of the BAY Centre (£250 towards furnishings for the BAY Centre building project), Alan Matthews of Burnham Scout Group (£200 towards the upgrading of fire extinguishers, alarms and electrical tetsing), Mrs J Golding of Highbridge Festival of the Arts (£250 towards child protection policy costs) and Ann Bray of King Alfred Concert Band (£150 towards the 25th anniversary of the band).
Also picking up cash were Mrs H Braund of Burnham and Highbridge Choral Society (£150 towards books and performances of Armed Man and Nelson Mass), Albert Laurence of Burnham and Highbridge Twinning Association (£150 towards a twin town football trip), Liz Smith of Burnham Philosophical Society (£50 towards the funding of its Richard Lock Memorial Lecture) and Dave Perrett of the Britain in Bloom Working Party (£150 towards the purchase of 42 new hanging baskets for lamp columns).
Other cheques were given to Mrs S Ballantyne of the BEES (£250 towards new lighting), Brian and Mary Curtiss of the Vale of Avalon Vintage Vehicle Run (£200 towards advertising, marshalling and signs for the Burnham end of the June event), and Martyn Lawson of the Social Group for Families for Autism and Aspergers (£100 towards equipment, toys and sensory equipment).
Seperately, the RNLI’s Mike Lang and BARB’s Alan Miller received donations from Burnham-On-Sea Mayor Eric Gill following a collection of money at the town’s annual Civic Service.
