A dog was rescued by Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards after plunging 100 metres down cliffs at Brean Down on Saturday afternoon (January 16th).
Coastguards from Burnham and Weston were called out just after 3pm when the owners of a missing Spaniel raised the alarm.
Amid concern that the owners may try to reach the dog, Coastguard cliff climber Stuart Browning, pictured, was lowered by ropes to the stranded dog, called Flex, where he was stuck on a ledge.
Dog walker Patrick Quirke said: “We were just down here for the day from Bristol and I’ve walked along Brean Down many times, so it was terrible when I looked around and he’d gone over the cliffs.”
“I think he was either spooked or chased after something. I looked for him for quite some time along the cliffs before deciding to call the Coastguard for help. They were superb and we are so grateful for their help.”
The dog’s owner, Jill Reagan, who was at nearby Brean Down Cove, added: “We’ve given Flex a check over and, incredibly, he seems fine – just shaken up by the fall.”
“I would like to thank Brean’s beachwarden Dave Furber for being so reassuring to me and staying with me during the incident. We’re relieved that it ended positively.”
