A Jack Russell which went missing for four days near Burnham-On-Sea is back in the arms of her relieved owner this week after a lucky rescue.
Penny, an eight year-old dog, went missing from her home near the M5 Sedgemoor Services last week. Her owner, Rona Phillips (pictured) had almost given up hope of seeing her again after no trace was found of her.
It was feared the much-loved animal had either run onto the busy M5 motorway or even be stolen.
Rona told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Penny’s been a hunting dog all her life and had never gone missing before. My daughter and I had taken her out for a quick walk across the fields and after a few minutes she just vanished.”
“We searched high and low for her, but couldn’t find any trace of her at all.”
“After seven hours missing, I started to feel something was definitely wrong and was really worried.”
“We hunted round the fields with the help of my neighbours’ dogs, had sheds checked, and contacted the local dog warden, but there was no sign whatsoever.”
“After three days searching, we’d all but given hope. I’d stayed up late for her to return each night and even come down several times during the night to see if she’d come back.”
“On the fourth day, my son, Colin, came to visit us. He went for a wander around one of the nearby fields and amazed us all by bursting into the house with Penny in her arms.”
“I had tears in my eyes when I saw her again after so long. It really was a dream come true.”
“Incredibly, Colin had spotted Penny’s tail wagging at the bottom of a rabbit or fox hole. He’d stretched down inside to find her legs trapped underneath her, meaning she couldn’t free herself.”
“She was black all over from all the struggling underground and was so hoarse from all her barking that she couldn’t make any noise.”
“It’s a miracle she’s been found – we are all so relieved to have her back again.”
