A fresh warning has been issued to dog owners after a pet was killed in a fall down cliffs at Brean Down on Saturday (July 15th).
Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards were called to Brean Down by the beach warden amid concern for the safety of the pet’s owner, who was trying to retrieve the animal.
The dog – a female Staffordshire Bull Terrier – had fallen down the cliffs on the south side of the Down, near the trig point, and had been missing since yesterday when it was spotted by the owner.
Beach warden Dave Furber had raised the alarm and called Coastguards after the dog’s owner said he would clamber out along the rocks at the base of the Down.
“There was concern that the owner would be putting himself in difficulty and I therefore called in the Coastguards to safely reach him,” he told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
A team of three Coastguards walked out along the Down, as pictured here, and retrieved the dog’s body, wrapped in a blanket, and also helped the owner back to the safety of the beach.
Coastguards again warned owners to keep dogs on leads while being walked on the Down. It is the latest in a spate of incidents on the Down where dogs have fallen over the cliffs.
