Free dog chipping sessions offered to Burnham-On-Sea pet owners
Sedgemoor District Council is offering a free micro chipping service later to help protect dogs in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge.
Usual fees are between £20 and £30, but Sedgemoor District Council is offering the service for free at a special session.
Micro chipping is now recognised as the most effective and secure way of permanently identifying a pet. The law is changing from April 2016 when all dogs will be required to have a microchip.
Free micro chipping will be available to local dogs at Bridgwater’s Countrywide Store in Wylds Road on Saturday, 5th September. Booking is required so people need to call the store on 01278 458055 to book a slot.
“Micro chipping is now recognised as the most effective and secure way of permanently identifying a dog. Many are lost or stolen and it can be very distressing for pet owners. Of the many thousands of dogs that go missing each year, it is estimated that less than half are reunited with their owners,” said council spokeswoman Claire Faun.
“If Sedgemoor’s Dog Wardens find a lost dog that has a microchip, they can contact the national database to find the owner’s details. The owner is then contacted and reunited with their dog.”
