Burnham-On-Sea dog owners are being urged to get their pets microchipped ahead of new laws coming into force.
The law is changing from April 2016 when all dogs will be required to have a microchip.
Sedgemoor District Council, in association with the Dog’s Trust, has begun offering free micro-chipping in Burnham and Bridgwater.
Usual fees are between £20 and £30. The Dog’s Trust is sponsoring the chips and Sedgemoor’s Dog Wardens are applying the chips.
“Micro chipping is now recognised as the most effective and secure way of permanently identifying a dog. Many are lost or stolen and it can be very distressing for pet owners. Of the many thousands of dogs that go missing each year, it is estimated that less than half are reunited with their owners,” said a ciuncil spokesman.
“If Sedgemoor’s Dog Wardens find a lost dog that has a microchip, they can contact the national database to find the owner’s details. The owner is then contacted and reunited with their dog.”
The next free session will be held in Bridgwater Town Hall on Wednesday, September 11th between 10am and 1pm.
