Dog walking areas on Burnham-On-Sea’s beaches could soon be changed under new proposals being considered by the Town Council.
Councillors are keen to see the summertime ban lifted on dogs being walked on the stretch of beach between the Pavilion and Maddock’s Slade.
Currently, there is a year-round ban on dogs on Burnham’s main beach between the jetty and pier while the area north of the pier has a summer ban.
Cllr Louise Parkin told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The existing rules on which beaches can be used by dog owners at different times of the year are confusing. I’d like to see the rules simplified, with the beach area between the Pavilion and Maddock’s Slade having its six-month dog ban lifted.”
“Burnham needs to be more dog-friendly to attract extra visitors into the town and this would be one way to simplify the whole matter.”
At the latest council meeting, town councillors said they would back the proposals providing Sedgemoor District Council’s beach wardens more stringently enforce dog-fouling laws to ensure Burnham’s beaches are kept clean.
Cllr Neville Jones said: “Here in Burnham we want the same level of service as Berrow where dog fouling laws are enforced well.”
The Town Council is taking up the proposals with Sedgemoor District Council to explore whether the changes could be introduced later this year.
