A seasonal dog ban returns to all beaches in Burnham-On-Sea today (Tuesday, May 1st).
The ban, enforced by Sedgemoor District Council, runs from May 1st until September 30th with restrictions in place on beaches between Maddock’s Slade and Burnham Sailing Club.
Those who are caught could be hit with a £75 fine, says the council.
Council spokeswoman Claire Faun said: “During the dog ban period, it is an offence to take your dog onto the beach and dog walkers can be issued with a fixed penalty notice of £75 or face prosecution for doing so.”
“The district council’s dog wardens undertake patrols at the beaches and will issue penalty notices to those caught with dogs on the banned beaches.”
During the past year, wardens have dished out fines on Burnham beach, between the jetty and the Pavilion, where dogs are banned all year round.
Dogs can still be walked on the beach north of Maddock’s Slade towards the beach lighthouse all year-round.
