60 homes, shops and youth hostel earmarked for Highbridge Hotel site

-

The owner of the fire-hit Highbridge Hotel has this week confirmed that a youth hostel and 60 homes are under consideration for the site.

In an interview with Burnham-On-Sea.com following our story earlier this week, Derek Mead (pictured) confirmed the plans.

He said: “We are having open discussions with the district council over the future of the site. One possibility is that a community facility could be created controlled by the YMCA.”

“A youth hostel is a possibility along with 60 new homes and two to three shops. Sedgemoor are being helpful to facilitate it and we have got the architects working on taking it forward.”

Asked whether he is committed to saving any part of the hotel itself, he added: “Part of the building is listed and has to be retained. We’d therefore like to retain part of the facade and use it in the new build.”

The former Highbridge Hotel has been derelict since a huge blaze occurred in April 2008.
